Abstract

Objective: The study aimed to analyse the efficacy of a biopeptide hydrolisate in improving the serum iron, serum ferritin and hemoglobin among female adolescents. The biopeptide hydrolisate product is made from soybean and enriched with multi micronutrients including iron after two weeks of consumption. Design: For the product’s efficacy study we conducted a one group pretest – posttest design. The biopeptide was given everyday for 14 days. The serum iron, serum ferritin and hemoglobin were measured twice at prior to administration and after day 14. The efficacy study was conducted in Pandeglang district, BantenParticipants: The respondents for the efficacy study were 52 respondents of female adolescent girls who met the inclusion criteria and had completed the trial until day 14.

Results: The serum iron was significantly improved after the biopeptide administration from 66.87± 32.44 to 103.77 ± 55.87 (p=0.000). While on the other hand serum ferritin was significantly improved with the biopedtides administration in respondents with low level of serum ferritin from 13,29 ± 9,5 to 17,48 ± 12,18 (p=0,00) but showed no difference in the group with normal serum ferritin from 28,06 ± 23,7 to 29,05 ± 21,3 (p=0,64). The average haemoglobin level of the resepondent before the biopeptide administration was normal 12.21 ± 1.29  and it did not change significantly after the biopeptide administration (12.05  ± 1.31 (0.016)). Hemoglobin did not increase significantly, probably because the hemoglobin was at a normal level

Conclusions: Soy Peptide products have the health benefits of increasing serum iron and serum ferritin. Keywords: soy-biopeptides, serum iron, serum ferritin, haemoglobin
